Dr Wendy Maples is a Town, District and County Councillor, who was first elected to the Town Council in 2019. Prior to becoming a councillor, she worked mostly in widening participation in higher education and as a teaching and learning consultant.

She moved to Lewes in 1998 and remains inspired by both the unique traditions of the town and its rebelliousness. She is committed to prioritising better social and environmental resilience in the Town and to ensuring good governance in the Councils. She has introduced a number of Town Council initiatives, including a new ‘soil stewardship’ allotment policy, better standardised and transparent grants’ procedures, and a new animal responsibilities and welfare policy.

She was also responsible for Lewes Town Council being the very first to sign the international Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/council-stem-fossil-fuel-investments-b1822896.html).

Wendy is an accredited Climate Reality spokesperson and a proud signatory to the ABCD (Climate action) pledge and the campaign for Proportional Representation.
