The new Sovereign is proclaimed in Lewes

Around the country, gestures of remembrance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and proclamations of the new King Charles III have been taking place.

On Saturday 10 September, the Mayor, Councillor Shirley-Anne Sains, attended Lewes House with Councillor Adrian Ross, chair of Lewes District Council, and Councillor Peter Pragnell, chairman of East Sussex County Council, to lay a wreath of flowers in remembrance of Queen Elizabeth II.

Following the Proclamation of the accession of the new Sovereign, King Charles III, in London at 11am that day, the Union flag on the Town Hall returned to full mast.

On Sunday 11 September, the Mayor attended the County Proclamation in East Sussex which was made by the High Sheriff of East Sussex, Jane King, which took place at County Hall at 1pm.

At 3pm on Sunday 11 September the Mayor made the Proclamation for the town of Lewes outside Lewes Town Hall, in the presence of Lewes Town Council officers and councillors, past Mayors, local dignatories and Council Chaplain Ben Brown. A large crowd of members of the public gathered to watch this historic moment.

Following the Proclamation, the Bishop of Lewes led prayers for the new King, the National Anthem was played by Lewes Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band (LGB Brass), and three cheers were given for the new King. During the Proclamation the Union flag was briefly raised to full mast, before returning to half-mast in which position it will now remain until the day after the funeral of Her Majesty.

Lewes Town Council is very grateful to members of the town’s Bonfire Societies for helping with road closures for the event as well as Tom Reeves of Edward Reeves Photography for sharing his photographs of the historic day. Following the event the Mayor thanked everybody who had attended and participated in the event.
