Over the next few weeks (August/September 2023) we will have contractors carrying out work to clean and restore the Lewes War Memorial.
This is following the granting of Planning Permission for the work to take place, as the memorial is Grade II* listed.
The work will include:
• Cleaning the stone using low pressure, high heat restoration steam cleaning
• Removing the blue/green dis-colouring from the stone
• Cleaning and protecting the bronze elements of the statue
• Restoring the 2 commemorative plaques, including carving and painting lettering to make clear again
• Re-cutting faded lettering on the body of the memorial to make it clearer
Some of this work will require the memorial to be scaffolded for safe access, and we anticipate this work being undertaken in mid-September.
