Lewes Town Council’s reusable cup scheme returns for Bonfire 2024 as councillors urge habit change

Lewes Town Council and our partners are encouraging people to use reusable cups again this Bonfire.
Visiting the town’s iconic pubs is always an important part of Bonfire in Lewes, and this year, people can again enjoy their drinks without single-use plastic, as all pubs have agreed to serve customers from a reusable cup.
As long as it has the standard markings and measures that pubs need for their licenses, customers can once again drink out of their own reusable cups, instead of single-use plastic one.
The council’s scheme was a huge success in 2023, with support from pubs, Bonfire Societies and most importantly young people. This scheme was first suggested by Green United, a group of young people in Lewes, supported by adults, coming together because of the climate emergency.

Reducing waste

Every year, the Environment First team at Lewes District Council pick up between five and seven tonnes of waste after Lewes Bonfire night, but last year the new reusable cup scheme helped to reduce that impact.

Inspired by wish from school children for the future of the town to include less use of single-use plastic, last year every pub in Lewes has agreed to serve customers from a reusable plastic cup.

Lewes Town Council helped this to happen by creating a reusable cup scheme which sees pubs and organisations hire the cups out for big events.

Over the past year, the reusable cups have been seen at events like the Battle of Lewes, Priory by Candlelight, and most recently at Lewes FC.
