Come and celebrate Black History Month 2023 with the Mayor of Lewes

Join the Mayor of Lewes in the Council Chamber for an evening of storytelling to celebrate trailblazing women as part of Black History Month 2023 on October 25.

Lewes Town Council is delighted to be working with film producers and the charity organisation Raising Futures Kenya to put together an intimate evening, supporting this year’s theme for Black History Month, ‘Saluting our Sisters’ which celebrates the experience of Black women.

The Mayor of Lewes, Councillor Matthew Bird, is hosting an event called Matriarchs of Movement on October 25 2023. At the event, the short film Our Menopause will have its Lewes premiere, followed by a Q&A with the producer, and there will be a panel event with charity Raising Futures Kenya.

The Mayor says “Lewes has a rich and fiercely independent history and I am happy and proud that Lewes Town Council recognises the enormous contribution of Black people to our shared history and to the diverse communities we work for.”

Nicola and Yansie said “People only know what they know. They don’t know what they don’t know. Our hope is that Our Menopause at Lewes Town Hall may deepen people’s understanding of the nuances of Black menopausal experience. If people know more then maybe we’re closer to Black menopausal people receiving the support or intervention that meets their needs.”

The council plays a key role in historical and cultural preservation in Lewes and celebrating events like Black History Month helps to make this more inclusive. Although BAME history is relevant all year round, the council respects the original aims of Black History Month: “challenging racism and educating society about the hidden Black history that was not taught in schools”.

By working with both groups the council is keen to support its aims of embracing Black History Month as part of an ongoing conversation about wider BAME history and culture, opening up the eyes of people in Lewes to the diversity that surrounds them.
