The Code of Recommended Practice for Local Authorities on Data Transparency –
application to Lewes Town Council
The Code is issued by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in exercise of his powers under section 2 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980 to issue a Code of Recommended Practice (The Code) as to the publication of information by local authorities about the discharge of their functions and other matters which he considers to be related.
The Code applies to (among others) a parish council which has gross annual income or expenditure (whichever is the higher) of at least £200,000. It therefore applies to Lewes Town Council.
A requirement of the code is that data should be released on expenditure over £500, (including costs, supplier and transaction information). Any sole trader or body acting in a business capacity in receipt of payments of at least £500 of public money should expect such payments to be transparent.
